"This volume integrates aspects of the Poetics into the broader corpus of Aristotelian philosophy. It both deals with some old problems raised by the treatise, suggesting possible solutions through contextualization, and also identifies new ways in which poetic concepts could relate to Aristotelian philosophy. In the past, contextualization has most commonly been used by scholars in order to try to solve the meaning of difficult concepts in the Poetics (such as catharsis, mimesis, or tragic pleasure). In this volume, rather than looking to explain a specific concept, the contributors observe the concatenation of Aristotelian ideas in various treatises in order to explore some aesthetic, moral and political implications of the philosopher's views of tragedy, comedy and related genres. Questions addressed include: Does Aristotle see his interest in drama as part of his larger research on human natures? What are the implications of tragic plots dealing with close family members for the polis? What should be the role of drama and music in the education of citizens? How does dramatic poetry relate to other arts and what are the ethical ramifications of the connections? How specific are certain emotions to literary genres and how do those connect to Aristotle's extended account of pathe? Finally, how do internal elements of composition and language in poetry relate to other domains of Aristotelian thought? The Poetics in Its Aristotelian Context offers a fascinating new insight to the Poetics, and will be of use to anyone working on the Poetics, or Aristotelian philosophy more broadly"--

La théorie de la littérature a valorisé une généalogie et un modèle conceptuel unique, celui de la Poétique d?Aristote. L?objet de ce bref ouvrage est de suggérer que d?autres modèles théoriques ont compté, notamment à la Renaissance. Centré non plus sur la construction d?une intrigue, d?une histoire, mais sur le personnage, l?art poétique d?Horace place la voix, le discours, la 'fiction de personne' au cœur de la création et de l?invention poétiques. Mais Horace est aussi un poète qui offre à la fois la théorie et la pratique d?une langue spécifiquement poétique. Enfin cette œuvre, entièrement à la première personne, permet de repenser la relation du poétique à l?éthique, de penser la littérature, et singulièrement la poésie, comme expérience.

Es gibt kaum einen literaturtheoretischen Text, der über Jahrhunderte hin eine solche Autorität ausgeübt hat wie Aristoteles kleiner Traktat Über die Dichtkunst. Die Poetik gilt seit der Renaissance als Text, der einen neuen, der Welt zugewandeten Aristoteles zeigt, der der Dichtung die Aufgabe zugewiesen habe, die empirische Wirklichkeit selbst nachzuahmen. Dem Dichter war dadurch eine rationale Aufgabe gestellt: Er sollte die Ordnung der Welt erkennen und darstellen. Der Zweifel an der Ordnung und Schönheit der Welt und die so genannte Genieästhetik führten im 18. Jahrhundert zu einem Bruch mit der aristotelischen Nachahmungspoetik. Die Probleme, die die Umdeutung der Poetik zu einer Nachahmungspoetik in der Frühen Neuzeit mit sich brachten, wurden in der Forschung oft zu wenig beachtet. Der Aufgabe, die wirkungsgeschichtlichen Vorgaben der modernen Aristoteles-Deutung intensiver mit zu bedenken, stellt sich der Kommentar von Arbogast Schmitt, der auch die anthropologische Verortung der Dichtung, wie sie bei Aristoteles selbst und bei den spätantiken und mittelalterlichen Kommentatoren vorgenommen wird, berücksichtigt. Er versucht auf diese Weise, die Intention der Poetik dem modernen Leser näher zu bringen. Der Kommentar hat einführenden Charakter und versucht auch für Studierende die Verständnisbedingungen, die ein heutiger Leser braucht, zusammenzustellen und zu erklären.

La Poétique porte sur la composition d’un type d’histoire, histoire étant ici une simulation de récit. Mais pour quelle raison Aristote a-t-il écrit un tel ouvrage? Et comment cet ouvrage s’insère-t-il dans son corpus? Le présent travail est une réponse à ces deux questions, une réponse après laquelle la Poétique n’est plus la même : la catharsis disparaît de la définition de la tragédie; son second livre n’est sans doute pas perdu … L’auteur répond aussi à une troisième question : pourquoi peut-on encore s’intéresser à la Poétique? Il propose ainsi une lecture actualisante, où non seulement il confronte Aristote avec des penseurs modernes et contemporains, mais où il prend parti. Le sous-titre, Diagoge – « passe-temps intellectuel » – ne fait que condenser en un seul mot sa réponse à ces trois questions.
